For The Painting Dummy I played around with a couple of ideas for logos before setting on a simple double circle with an illustrative paint brush diagonally across it. The muted greens for the background make the red and purple of the paint brush pop. I kept with cooler colors for the background. For the lettering I went with a friendly sans-serif. The color I kept warm with a bright golden yellow. I like the logo as simple as it is, I think I can use it as an identity across many media formats.
The logo comes from trying to represent what I will be mostly focusing on, painting miniatures. The idea of an actual art dummy as part of the logo mark was entertained for a while but was dropped as I thought it make the logo mark look a little too crowded and didn’t read well at lower resolution and sizes. I like having the tag line, “learning as I do”, as part of the complete logo. This represents a big part of my focus on trial and error in the painting process and experience. I really want to show, especially beginners, even people that have been in the hobby as long as I have still had some trial and errors as we go.
I started out with different fonts and finally settled on Ubuntu. I think it gives a sense of open friendliness to the logo. I like how simple it is and clean the font is while still having some style to it. I wanted to keep the font warm and friendly, so decided on a warm golden yellow for the font. I’m not sure how, or if, I will develop it more over time. The boldness of the font can lend itself to easily take cut out imagery or even designs integrated into the letters themselves (yes, I’ve played around with that as well). For now, I think I like the simplicity of where I’m starting from.
Since this is new to me, I haven’t developed any marketing material as of yet. I can see this logo working well on all printed and digital media though. The simple shapes and bold colors on a cool background catches the eye and is legible at almost any size and resolution. The font is clear and just as legible on most formats I can think of. Printed materials like letterhead or business cards will be easily recognizable as well as legible with these color schemes.
When I get my legs under me in this, I hope to start marketing on social media and even doing videos on YouTube or another similar platform. With this color scheme, I think it will be an easily recognizable brand across many platforms and media.
